The French Pyrenees is an awesome place for trekking: big mountains, pine forests, beautiful wildflowers, sunny and dry with a facinating history and great food. This summer, in partnership with Altitude Adventure, we are organising an Open Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition. The expedition dates are:
- Saturday 10th to Saturday 17th August 2019
The expedition is taking place in the French Pyrenees near the town of Font-Romeu. The base for the expedition is a guest house run by Altitude Adventure called Mouli del Riu in a village of Saint Pierre dels Forcats.
Font-Romeu and its neighbouring villages sit on a high plateau at around 1,500m to 1,800m. The scenery is very beautiful with lots of lakes, pine forests, gorges and high mountains (2,700m). An excellent network of paths and trails crisscross the area providing lots of scope for walking. There is a range of mountains immediately to the south of Saint Pierre dels Forcats which offers spectacular hiking with lots of areas for wild camping. The nearby Corenza gorge provides an exciting route to descend from the mountains back down to the trailhead and road.
The weather in this part of the Pyrenees in August is typically sunny and dry with occasional thunderstorms. The temperature can get up to the mid to high 20C so staying hydrated and using sun hats and sun cream is essential.
The expedition is being organised and run in partnership with Altitude Adventure UK Ltd. Owned and run by Ian and Angela Pendry, Altitude Adventure provides mountain biking, hiking and snowshoeing tours from their guest house, the Mouli del Riu, in the French Pyrenees. Alastair, Ian and Angela have worked in partnership for a number of years, most recently running summer Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold expeditions (in 2016, 2017 and winter 2019).
