Isle of Skye Open Gold Qualifying Expedition – 2020

oznor

In June 2020 we will be running an Open Gold Qualifying expedition to the Isle of Skye. The date for the expedition is:

  • 1-4 June 2020

Skye is a spectacular island off the west coast of Scotland, one of the most scenic places in Britain and a location for many movies over the years. Three gold expedition participants have already booked on and have sketched out a route.

The route

The route begins at the town of Broadford on Skye. Following the route of the Skye trail in part the route will go south then west to Loch Slapin and a wild camp on the shore. You’ll have great views across to a mountain called Blaven, part of the famous Cuillin mountains range.

On day two the route will follow the coast and then head west across the Strathaird peninsula to Camusunary Beach and another wild camp. Day three will be an exploration day. From your base at the beach you’ll have an opportunity to explore the coastline or hike up Blaven for one of the finest views in all of Scotland.

On day four you’ll pack up your kit and journey into the heart of the Cuilling mountains to Loch Coruisk. The route goes north up Strath na Creitheach then south west, over a 300m pass to Loch Coruisk. This last day of trekking is relatively short but brings the hardest walking of the expedition with rough terrain and a river crossing. You are rewarded, however, with amazing views. Loch Coruisk is an amazing spot: rugged and beautiful with rocky mountains rising steeply from the loch side.

At the end of the expedition you’ll be picked up by boat – the Bella Jane – and taken to the small village of Elgol. From there you’ll connect with a bus to Broadford where you started.

Getting to Broadford

The expedition begins and ends at Broadford Youth Hostel. You’ll need to travel to Broadford the day before on 31 May (arriving late afternoon is fine) so that you’re ready to start on 1 June. To get to Broadford you can travel by train from Glasgow to the Kyle of Lochalsh and then get a bus to Broadford. Alternatively you can get a bus from Glasgow all the way to Broadford. Detailed information public transport options will be provided to participants. At Broadford Youth Hostel you’ll get a chance to meet the other participants, do any final route planning and expedition prep and also meet your superviser and assessor. The following morning you’ll begin the expedition.

When you finish the expedition you’ll have the option of staying in Broadford youth hostel for a second night before journeying back south on the 5th of June.
