What’s involved

The expedition begins in Dunkeld. Please meet up at Dunkeld and Birnam Train station at 11:35am on 9 July 2020. Participants have the option of either making their own way to the start or instead a lift in our minibus from Glasgow, Stirling and Perth.

The expedition goes from Dunkeld to Blair Atholl via Loch Ordie, Kirkmichael and Glen Fearnach. All the camps are wild camps. The expedition will finish at Blair Atholl Train station about 1:30pm. Participants are free to make their own way home from Blair Atholl or instead, catch a train at 14:20 back to Dunkeld and Birnam train station where minibus transport will be available back to Perth, Stirling and Glasgow.

Each day of the practice expedition involves about 15km of walking. Underfoot we will be using tracks and footpaths, some of which will be muddy.

Training on navigation skills, campcraft, route planning and team work will be provided by instructors.

What to bring

Click here for the full kit list including a video offering advice on packing a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition rucksack. We will provide you with tents, stoves, gas canisters, map cases and rucksack liners.

Participants should bring the following food:

  • Enough food for the 4 day practice expedition: that’s three breakfasts; four lunches and three evening meals.

Cost

The total cost of the expedition week is £150 per participant.

Information about the area

Perthshire and in particular the countryside to the north of Dunkeld is great for walking. The countryside consists of rolling hills with woodland, heather moorland and lochs. The area has lots of big estates and farms where hill-sheep farming, fishing and shooting are important activities.
