Workshop Overview
Here at Aspen we have always sought to add value to our outdoor experiences by sharing knowledge of the flora and fauna, geology, history and folklore and the landscapes we journey through. In this workshop we focus in particular on the flora and fauna one encounters on a hill walk. On the course we will look at the following:
- Tips for identifying trees using the bark, buds, catkins and overall shape of the tree
- Identifying springtime flowers
- Learning about the Latin names of plants
- Learning about moorland habitats, identifying our three heathers all the ‘berries’ (crowberry, blaeberry, cowberry, bear berry, cloudberry)
- Learning about the different uses of plants we encounter on the hill; e.g. for medicines, weaving, and consumption.
Useful fields study guides and other resources will also be shared with participants.
The course will start at 10am and finish at 4pm.
Venue
The venue for the workshop will be Ben Venue, accessed from Leddard Farm, by Loch Ard. The plan will be to meet up in Aberfoyle in the main car park at 10am, then car share to get to the start point of the walk. We will walk up through the deciduous oak woodland to the open hill, seeing different habitat types.
