Leadership Training

A hill day focused on Leadership Skills, for current or prospective hillwalking club leaders. The day includes: planning, general preparation, leader communication, decision making, mounitoring, risk and hazard awareness, emergency procedures and group management.

Bronze National Navigation Award Course

The Bronze National Navigation Award course is run over two days and provides an introduction to navigation skills. The course is aimed at beginners and is for all ages. Upon completing the course you’ll receive a formal qualification and certificate (SCQF level 4). Our open courses are typically run in the countryside around Kilsyth and Mugdock Country Park. Upon request, we can run the course in other parts of Scotland.

Silver National Navigation Award

The Silver National Navigation Award is a two-day course and develops your skills so that can navigate in open country using compass bearings and natural landforms. The course is ideal for participants who are confident in using a map to follow paths and tracks in lowland countryside terrain and want to learn how to navigate off-path.

Gold National Navigation Award

The Gold National Navigation Award is a two-day course developing competence in off-path navigation, adding techniques and skills for dealing with complex contour features, large and small. On completion of the course, participants will be able to plan and confidently follow safe routes away from paths and tracks in any open countryside.

NNAS Tutor Award Course

This one day course introduces participants to different teaching techniques and exercises as part of a structured and stepped approach to teaching navigation. The course provides guidance on how to structure and organise National Navigation Award courses. It also provides lots of information on useful navigation resources. Holding the NNA Tutor Award is a prerequisite to running Bronze, Silver, and Gold NNA Award courses.

National Navigation Award Night Owl Course

This four-hour course will equip you with essential navigation skills to explore and enjoy the outdoors safely after dark. You’ll learn how to adjust your pacing and timing for nighttime conditions, use relocation techniques when visibility is low, and apply navigation strategies to stay on course.

One day Bushcraft Course

Want to learn some bushcraft skills like friction fire, making natural shelters, foraging for food or making natural cordage? Bushcraft is about thriving in wild places and developing a set of skills and knowledge help you do that; using natural resources to sustain you, feed you and keep you warm. Bushcraft helps you develop a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural environment. The more you learn the more satisfying it becomes. Outdoor Learning for Teachers and Youth Workers

We offer outdoor learning workshops for teachers and youth workers on how to engage young people with woodland habitats. The course involves tree and wildflower identification, making natural cordage, basket making, nature art and shelter building. The course is intended to help Leaders develop young people's interest in woodlands and generate ideas for expedition aim activity.

Mountain Skills Course

Aspen Outdoors Ltd is a provider the Mountain Training Mountain Skills Course. The Mountain Skills Course is 18 hours long, undertaken over 2.5 days. It is an excellent introduction to hillwalking in mountain terrain. Mountain Training is the Awarding body for skill courses and qualifications in walking, climbing and mountaineering, that operates across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Winter Skills Training

We offer one day winter skills training, and winter skill residentials run over multiple days. Skillls training covers snowcraft, kit and equipment, avalanche awareness, snow shelters and winter hazards.
